Nafisah is a writer, story coach and co-founder of the Muslim Writers' Salon, a global community of Muslim writers offering courses, resources, networking and friendship to increase the representation of Muslim writers in all genres.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, via her Cuban immigrant parents, Nafisah lived in story while witnessing the world unfold around her. Reality was very different than the books she read in the library. There weren't any stories of Black and Brown girls growing up in Brooklyn, she started writing her own stories and dreamt of building libraries.
Nafisah has a BA in Latin American Studies from Bradford College and a MA in Writing and Consciousness from New College of California.
Nafisah's play Amor Cubano: In a Bottle, a Tube and a Small Packet (2007-2008) was produced in the Bay Area and NYC and toured the USA. Her writing and performances emerged in the NYC spoken word scene. Nafisah studied creative writing after moving to Oakland and lived there for 17 years.
She has been leading writing workshops for over 20 years, recently focusing on story coaching for writers of the global majority living in the west.
After a motherhood hiatus Nafisah is working on a series of essays for writers focusing on generational trauma, healing, transformations, writing and changing narratives.
Nafisah currently lives in Central Portugal with her two children and the stray cats on her terrace that welcome her food but not her petting.
"Sukina's poetry course was a beautiful forum for me to grow and gain confidence as a poet. It offered a sacred space to reconnect with my heart (and with others) in the midst of a challenging, difficult year. I don't think there was a single session which did not move me to tears, either from the poetry and depth of emotion the prompts drew out of me, or by listening to the raw and powerful poetry that the other participants created. Thank you Sukina!"

“Sukina’s course gave me license to write about God in my most poetic voice at a time when I was struggling to truly understand my relationship to the Divine and when I was still uncertain whether I had a poetic voice. These are not challenges overcome overnight however this workshop empowered me to worship God in ways I did not know I could. It gave new life to my heart."

"Being part of Muslim Writers' Salon has given me a clear focus and structure to work on my manuscript. Working with Nafisah has helped me identify gaps in my novel and I feel supported by her wisdom and clarity around my novel. She offers unconditional support, while the writing groups and recordings in the salon constantly remind me of who I am as a writer and how needed our words are in the world."

"The guidance I have received from Nafisah has been invaluable in helping me remain steadfast in my creative pursuits. Beyond the mentorship, the sense of community and the diverse range of activities organized by the salon have offered me a profound sense of belonging. Being part of this intellectually stimulating environment has been a source of constant inspiration and growth."
